Warning from the Power Line

Just a warning, we have had several reports of kids being seen trying every parked car door they pass during the night, they mostly seem to enter the car looking for spare change or anything small they can steal.

On Grove Street we have several residents who work different shifts; they have seen the kids and shouted at them and they have run off.

They are not breaking into the cars, just looking for an opportunity when a door is left unlocked.

Similarly a family forgot to lock their front door just once and amazingly there seem to be people who try house doors too, as a youth had entered the house and was seen by a 3 year old who went downstairs looking for her toy. She went upstairs and told her Mom and the person ran off after stealing some money. Very scary.

So please remember to lock up or at least if you prefer to leave your car unlocked, don't leave any valuables in the car.

If anybody sees or has seen the kids, please could you call either the non-emergency police number 986-6222 or the Power Line. If you have a description of them please let us know that too.

♦♦♦ POWER LINE BULLETIN ♦♦♦

July 15/10

Recently we have noticed some new graffiti it has been painted in neon pink spray and says BLOODZ, this is a fairly new gang that so far has not been seen in Point Douglas, I am told that we definitely don't want them to make themselves at home here.

The youth that were spray painting were seen in the act and one of our Citizens On Watch, gave me a really good description. Quite sensibly since our COW was alone he did not attempt to stop the young men, but contacted me later.

The youth were aboriginal, wearing red caps, black shirts, jeans with a red bandana hanging out of a back pocket, the youth that was spray painting was wearing red gloves.

Please could you let me know if you see more of this graffiti , it has been seen on Prince Edward and Grove St, we think that the youths that did the graffiti do not live in the area, but if you see young men who fit the description, also please let me know.

Response from North Ender:

the Bloods are not new. They have been around a long time. My area of the north end is covered in their graffitti and it comes in every colour, some of the writing made to look like dripping blood. Its not always pink. They always wear the red bandanas and its always hanging out a pocket. many of them attend St johns high, they have members with names such as Guimond and McKay, they are all native. i have lived here since 2002 and they have been around longer than that. they like to wear dickies brand work pants because they are baggy, complete with the red bandanas.

Out-of-Control Dogs

Hi everybody,

I love dogs, but many people are quite afraid of big dogs; so this is a reminder to all dog owners, Norquay Park aka Banana Park, is NOT an off leash Park.

I have received complaints that some people are allowing their dogs to run free in the park, apparently without a leash or even an owner present; people who are not used to dogs feel frightened by them.

Please be aware that if your dog is found running free that neighbours can call the pound and get your animal picked up.

I know as a dog owner that very occasionally my dogs slip out of the gate and we have to give chase. It is very expensive if dogs are picked up by the pound particularly if they have no licence.

I have to  commend most dog owners in Point Douglas. Living on the side of Rover I see many of you walking your very well controlled dogs and picking up solid waste that they leave.

The sad part is that just a few careless people can upset the community.

If you are approached by a dog off leash the more calmly you react the better. If the dog is wagging it's tail, it  probably just wants to sniff around you , try not to get upset don't hit or kick at the dog, ignore it and it will get bored and wander off.

Frightened dogs who cower away from you are often more dangerous, and dogs defending their own yard can be more dangerous. Try not to look directly into the dogs eyes as some dogs see this as a challenge.

If you find a dog running loose, call Animal Control Services (The Pound) 986-2155, give them a description of the dog and where it can be found.

I just wish it was as easy to deal with out of control kids!

Enjoy the lovely weather, Chris

Power Line Goes Global! - Letter from a Power Line fan

Hi Christine,

I enjoyed your article in the current issue of The Point and have forwarded a copy to our daughter Elise who lives in Dublin.  When we last got together over a pint or two I mentioned that Elise has been working as a community planner for the past 2 or 3 years in Dublin as part of the revitalization of “Ballymun”.  Ballymun is a public housing “neighbourhood” which was built in the 1950/60’s and which makes the original development of Regent Park in Toronto seem like a success story.

The revitalization of Ballymaun has been going on for many years now.  A similar approach is being taken as that in Regent Park in that the dismal faceless towers of public housing are being demolished, and existing residents are being housed in smaller scale units with front yards, usable open spaces and doors opening onto the street.  I’ve attached “before” and “after” photos of the development.  Dublin also has been introducing measures to enable existing tenants to find employment, and rent-to-own programs for the new housing units.  Information on the work being done in Ballymun can be found at www.brl.ie

The focus of Elise’s work is to work with existing residents to create a “Safer Ballymun”.  We were chatting on Skype this morning and I told her about your article and the success that Point Douglas has experienced with the “Powerline”.  I also mentioned the recent editorial in the WFP which quite rightly lauds your initiative.

I have copied Elise on this e-mail.  She would appreciate if you could send her any information which you might have on the “Powerline” and how it works.

Thanks for your help with this Christine and keep up the good work!

Regards,

Harry

March 17/10 - Hi all, this is a new trick for us in Point Douglas, so I am sending it to WPS and then I will send it out to the C.O.W.s on the Powerline
That Citizens On Watch

hi Chris, we didn't get any large items stolen over here, but the license plates were stolen off our car probably between some time Sunday? and Monday afternoon. The thieves were kind enough to replace one of the stolen plates with someone else's license plate which my wife turned into the police.

Mar 16/10 = Air Compressor Stolen

Just a quick reminder that with the better weather, "STUFF HAPPENS".

I received a call this morning from a resident on Barber, it seems between 5am and 7.30 am this morning the garage side door was broken into and a large air compressor was stolen.

Since this was  such a large item it would appear that more than one person was involved.

I f you are approached with a great deal on an air compressor please let the POWERLINE or the police know! If possible take the address where it could be seen.

Also as far as possible make sure your out buildings are as secure as possible.

Feb/10 - Boarded House Petition Hits Home!

I am not sure that you can actually smell success, anymore that the neighbours on Lusted could actually smell the "insanitary" house that has been boarded up on  their street forever.

But it is certainly an "icky" feeling to have a house with that sign on it a few homes away from your own and so wasteful when there is a shortage of houses in the city.

I sent out an email a while ago encouraging residents to start their own street petitions to get the boarded houses on their street cleaned up and opened, to harmonise with a general push the POWERLINE coordinators are doing to open up the boarded and vacant houses in our area.

Congratulations to the residents of Lusted, you have done it, it was almost miraculous  a street monitor started a petition and had not even turned it over to the POWERLINE and suddenly the boards were down the place is being cleaned up and rented out after many years of being boarded up!

BRILLIANT, this is the power of the residents in a community when they decide to take control of their own  neighbourhood.

I would love to go out and get signatures myself on the petitions, but due to a chronic disease I have developed I am more or less under house arrest for the winter.

The disease is Scleroderma, quite rare, but my hands often go numb with cold even  inside the house while I am typing, and I have lost most of the strength in my legs and can't walk very far. Even thinking about a walker for my birthday, OH great!

Good job being the POWERLINE person keeps me busy and can mostly be done from home. (It is an auto immune disease and not contagious so no worries there!)

Recently Roanna the chair of PDRC gave me a button it says:

NEVER DOUBT THAT A SMALL GROUP OF THOUGHTFUL COMMITTED CITIZENS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD: INDEED IT'S THE ONLY THING THAT EVER HAS.

Margaret Meade

Thanks Ro, Point Douglas is the living proof of that statement!

This came in from Austin Street, so watch your tanks, it may have been a one shot deal or maybe some new group of lads....

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to let you know that last night someone was attempting to take gas from our car. We were going out this afternoon and noticed a siphon hose sticking out of our tank and a 2 L pop bottle sitting beside the car. It doesn't look like they got anything. We think it may have happened around 11:30 when my mother in law took the dog out before bed. Because the dog kept barking toward the back lane, and she may have scared them away since all their stuff was there. So now us and my wife's parents went and bought locking gas caps.
