HOMEWORK/COMPUTER PROGRAM :  Mon. – Fri. 5:00 – 8:00 pm.

This program is designed to help children with their homework. The teachers send home an agenda book with their homework and if the child needs help in doing it, whether it be math or reading, the program is here to provide them with the help they need.  It also helps them with improving their computer skills, such as writing essays or stories, even searching the web for help researching or writing resumes. The program has two mentors supervising the kids, one high school student and one adult.  Once their work is done they are allowed to play games on the computer or learn some computer skills.  Other kids are allowed to go on the computers with the supervision of the mentors to use the internet and play games.

Notice to Parents

Now that the Centre is open later hours, please remember that you are responsible for ensuring that your children get home safely and in a timely manner from their activities at the Centre.

Some children are at the Centre from the time they get out of school until well after dark. Some of the children are afraid to go home in the dark.

The Community Centre does not have the resources to escort children to their homes.

Staff at the Centre have tried calling parents to come and get their children, and there is often no one at home. This is not acceptable. The Centre is not a babysitting service. If parents are not able to pick up their children, they must make arrangements for someone else to get them home safely.

Please be advised that children ten years of age and under will now be sent home at 7pm from the Centre, so that they are not out by themselves late at night. Please ensure that there is an adult at home at this time.

Any questions or concerns may be directed to Rita Richard, Program Coordinator, at 943-6897 or email to nccentre@mts.net

80+ Kids Attend Great Halloween Party at Norquay Community Centre

The poster that drew over 80 excited children to the
Norquay Community Centre's Halloween Dance

Norquay Community Centre's Halloween Dance and Costume Party for neighbourhood kids a Spooktacular Success despite lack of parent volunteers

Well, Val and I had a bet going on how many children would attend. She said about 20 I said about 70. What we had was 80! plus a few late stragglers.

I'm sorry to say attendance of parents was very poor - there were only three parents - but I'm happy to say that all the kids were on their best behavior; no fights, no pushing, it was just a great turnout.

We did have a lot of volunteers from The Welcome Home and some of my past City of Winnipeg staff came out to help as well. I wish we had photos to show you of all the fun the kids had, and their great costumes, but the person who volunteered to take photos didn't turn up.

GAP (Graffiti Art Programming) volunteers were great  -  they did face painting from the time they started till the end. They were so busy doing up little faces. It was just a great evening!

As for who won the prize for best costume, they all did. I managed to get a lot of children's/youth books donated from a company, so everyone got one. I had 10 pumpkins donated which I raffled off for the parents. I also had Cassandra dress up like Little Red Riding Hood holding a basket of goodies, and she walked around passing them out to all.

All in all, it was a really spooktacular evening! - Rita Richard, NCC Manager

A few volunteers regularly make a big difference for a lot of kids. We always need more volunteers, so please take the opportunity to support your community centre in their efforts to keep our kids safe, happy, and out of trouble. We can't do it without you!

To find out how you can be a Norquay Community Centre volunteer, call the Centre at 943-6897 or email Rita at nccentre@mymts.net

Fall, 2009 - This is the beautiful new mural on the wall of Norquay Community Centre at 65 Granville Street. It was a joint project of the Norquay Community Centre, Graffiti Gallery and Tim and Connie Friesen of AVEC (Arts Vitally Enrich Community) who came all the way from Wisconsin to work on this mural with our kids. This was the grand finale of the Art Lives Here! event put on by the community centre. Well done, everyone! The kids also painted a number of other, smaller pictures that are equally beautiful. These pictures will soon be gracing the walls of the community centre. Come on out and take a look!

A brilliant splash of colour   Jeremy Johnson proudly stands in front of the mural that his big brother Phillip helped to paint.   Big Brother Phillip Johnson.
Phillip also worked hard making our beautiful community gardens this summer, with the Boys & Girls Club

Norquay Community Centre Fall '09 News
by Valerie Himkowski

Despite the crazy weather this summer we managed to go on all our field trips with nice warm days for Fun Mountain and Tinkertown. Over 50 people came on the trip to Tinkertown and devoured the 75 sandwiches we took with us. Thanks to our Green Team and City of Winnipeg Rec Workers for their help on these field trips and all their other hard work over the summer. Activities included games, sports, crafts, cooking, and fun on our very own mini inflatable bouncers. Speaking of sports, we held a Field Day event with prizes for everyone who participated. Every Thursday, a pancake breakfast was held and more than just our kids ate their way through the stacks of pancakes. Some of you know who I am talking about!!

Graffiti Art Programming was at the centre full time this summer with their ‘Art Lab’. They ended summer programming with a bang, as we spent a whole week painting a large 40 ft. mural to hang on the front of the community center. Thanks to artists Tim and Connie Friesen from Wisconsin and all the community members who helped paint this wonderful piece of art. The last day of that week was the unveiling of the mural and a party thrown by GAP and NCC to appreciate all the art done over the summer.

At left are Connie Friesen, Jerry Peters, and Tim Friesen hard at work on the mural.

Starting September 8th all regular fall programming will commence. All your favorites will be back, hopefully with even more activities and programs for those who are looking for something different. Our partners will be back, including, GAP, the “Check it Out/Reading Zone and the City of Winnipeg “Spin” program. Phone the centre for more information on times and dates in case of change.
