Opportunity also provides numerous social service programs such as Safety
Aid, legal services, income tax preparation, housing consultations and
counselling. |

Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg is a community-based youth-serving
organization whose focus is both developmental as well as preventative. We
help our members overcome the many barriers they face by increasing their
resiliency - their ability to address issues and make good decisions for
themselves. We give them the opportunity to relate to caring, interested
people that are positive role models, and to increase their skill levels in
critical areas of their lives. We offer children and youth from all
economic, cultural and social backgrounds access to the resources supports
and opportunities that will enable them to overcome barriers and achieve
their positive potential in life. We work together with families and
volunteers in each community, in partnership with government and other
organizations, to create healthy community solutions to providing children
and youth with what they need for optimal development. |

The
Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity program area promotes physical
fitness, participation in sports, positive use of leisure time and the
development of social and interpersonal skills. The Arts and Cultural
Appreciation program enables children and youth to develop creativity and
cultural awareness through participation in cultural experiences, creating
visual arts and crafts, and exposure to the performing arts. The Education
and Career Exploration program enables youth to develop skills, knowledge
and an attitude that will help them in school and employment. The Health
Awareness and Life Skills Development program develops young people’s
capacity to engage in positive behaviours that nurture their own well-being,
set personal goals, and acquire the skills to live successfully as
self-sufficient adults. The Leadership and Service to Community program
empowers youth to support and influence their club and community, sustain
meaningful relationships with others, participate in the democratic process
and respect their own and others' cultural identities |

The
Point Douglas
Residents
Committee has been active in the area since the 1970s. It has been working
in a variety of ways to improve the life of the community. The PDRC has
active committees addressing neighbourhood safety, housing, environmental
issues. It has organized the regular community clean ups, been involved in
tree planting along the river bank, has made and revised community safety
and housing plans. Over the past year initiatives have included the broad
based campaign to shut down crack houses in the area while also working with
partners to increase the variety and quality of recreation programs for
children and young people. In the past year its capacity has grown with the
opening of an office at 881 Main Street and
finding funds to employ a Program Manager (Martin
Landy) and a
Capacity Builder (Heather Geddie). Amongst the new initiatives are a
comprehensive community survey, focus on youth employment opportunities,
community economic development, traffic and other safety issues in the
community, building upon the historic nature of Point Douglas and
development of a community wide volunteer program. |

Brief Description of Programs/Projects |

CSI
Summer Learning Enrichment Program. The program runs in July and August,
with instructor training and school familiarization happening in May and
June. The CSI
program focuses on exploring the community of the students that enter the
program while creating a basis of academic success in math, English and
science. The goals of the program are to 1. Engage children considered at
risk in enriching learning opportunities throughout the summer to prevent
summer learning loss, 2. improve educational outcomes for children living in
poverty, 3. Enhance the skills and employment experience of local youth and
4. give education students opportunities to work in the inner city. |

of both numeracy and literacy skills, as well as an improvement in social
relations. We have made many connections to community members and
organizations and we are pleased to witness the students become
active members of their community as well. In addition, the program allows
university students to act as mentors to high school students who are also
employed in the program. |

The
Ross House was originally built on the shores of the Red River at the foot
of Market Avenue in1854. In 1949, the Manitoba Historical Society, in
conjunction with the City of Winnipeg, took possession of it and moved it to
Higgins Ave. across from the Canadian Pacific Railway passenger station. The
Museum was moved to its current location in Joe Zuken Heritage Park in 1984.
It plays an important part in the overall interpretation of the park. |

The
Museum hosts an interpretation exhibit as well as rooms set to reflect the
life of the Ross family when their home served as the post office. The site
has a garden program for the local children. It hosts a variety of public
events such as the Canada Day picnic and the bi-annual neighborhood
clean-up. A guided walking tour of the Historic Point Douglas is offered
free of charge by a reservation request to the phone # 943-3958 as well as
general inquiries. |
